Questions and answers regarding river preservation
Q: Well, then, what's this talk about "McMansions?" Shouldn't people at least be able to build whatever kind of house they want to?
A: Of course they should. But again, only to the limit that it doesn't take anything away from other people. And this is not just a matter of personal taste; we're sure there is someone out there who would feel perfectly comfortable with the idea of putting a standard glass-and chrome McDonalds in the middle of Main Street in Chester or Essex.
Most current residents of those towns would probably disagree with that person.
To us, a riverside house that calls attention to itself detracts from the "riverscape," which is a valuable resource in need of protection. The State of Connecticut says so too, but isn't doing a whole lot to enforce its opinion.
